I am not an author. I’m very much a storyteller, and when I was younger, I thought I might like to be a writer, but that’s because I spent all my time daydreaming and telling tales and I figured there ought to be a career in that. But there very much was not. But I am rather proud of having written this little tale and I wanted to thank a few folks and credit a few folks and I see no reason to have two sections for it.
This book is dedicated to my wife because one day, after reading Tress of the Emerald Sea, I realized that if Brandon Sanderson can write a novel for his wife, I can, too. Okay, mine is more of a novella, but we can’t all be so wordy.
The setting I owe to both my own boredom and Matt Colville and the fine folks at MCDM, makers of great roleplaying games. I’d used this setting a tiny bit before, but when they announced their new RPG I decided to brush the dust off this setting and thought some fiction would help it come to life and I think it did.
The cover art was excellently done (rather at the last minute) by Crystal Edelman.
Also, big thanks to Google, because without it, I can’t imagine how I’d get anything written. How else will I figure out what ponderosa pine smells like?
The Original dedication lies below:
For Traci.
I was inspired to tell a tale my wife would like, so I put a lot of things I knew she loved in it. Psychic stuff, magic stuff, family stuff, nerdy stuff. And then I went and added a bunch of painful stuff. Sorry, Traci. I hope it still works.
